WHO IS
Pine Grove
The Historical Chronicle
Pine Grove is a family-oriented church that believes in the full counsel of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that God is the head of our ministry, we are guided by the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Christ died that we all may be saved.
Hebrews 11:1 states, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1886, under the leadership of Rev. Robert Thompson. The church took its name because of all the large pine trees in the grove off Highway 49, in what was Pocahontas, Mississippi. During the infant stages of Pine Grove, there were very few members, and dues were only a dime at that time. The first physical building of Pine Grove was constructed of scrap wood and part brush which was called a brush harbor. Lighting for the church was a few oil lamps along the walls, with one wood heater, which provided very little protection from the weather. Wagons, horseback riders, and walkers made their way to Pine Grove seeking a word from the Lord.
In later years, Pine Grove rebuilt a new edifice that was completely of lumber. This project was completed under the leadership of Rev. James Perry. Following this, the church was destroyed by a powerful storm in 1922. Many improvements were made as years passed and the church grew spiritually and financially with the aid of the Holy Spirit.
In 1981, under the leadership of Rev. Spencer Houseworth, Pine Grove was rebuilt to accommodate the tremendous increase in membership. A Bell Tower stands to the right of the front entrance to the church. This bell was saved from the church of 1922 which would ring throughout the area when a member died. Everyone knew, when the Bell Tolle, a soul has gone on to Glory.
Rev. Leroy Jones, Rev. Cary Johnson, Rev. August Robertson, Rev. Lewis Moore, Rev. W. P. Whitfield, Rev. Jack Hill, Rev. Byers, Rev. Dan Hill, Rev. L.L. Love, Rev. R.L. Robinson, and Rev. Spencer Houseworth who served faithfully for 46 years were our past pastors. We give God all of the glory for the progress of Pine Grove. We have grown tremendously over the years. We are blessed to have worship services every Sunday, Biblical Enrichment each Wednesday night.
We are blessed to currently be under the pastoral leadership of our pastor, Rev. Dr. Cordell E. Fields, Sr. Our prayer is that Pastor Fields will, through faith and the direction of the Holy Spirit, lead us through this next journey in our spiritual lives.
We are blessed to be afforded the opportunity to look back and see how God has truly blessed Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church. We will continue with that same faith and dedication that the members had in 1886.
